Ras Laffan Petrochemicals Project

We are thrilled to announce our contribution to the Ras Laffan Petrochemicals Project (RLPP) in Qatar, an ambitious $6 billion initiative that marks a leap forward in industrial innovation and energy development. Jointly developed by Chevron Phillips Chemical and Qatar Energy, RLPP aims to position Qatar as a leader in the global petrochemical market by expanding its production capabilities and enhancing its economic diversification.

In this project, CUMIC is proud to have supplied 365 tons of HRP SA516 Gr70. Known for its high-performance capabilities, this steel grade is widely used in industries such as oil and gas, petrochemical, and power generation. It will be used to construct key distillation columns within the ethane cracker—a critical component of the RLPP. With an impressive capacity of 2,080 KTA, this cracker will become the largest in the Middle East and among the largest globally.

Spanning over a 435-acre site in Ras Laffan Industrial City, RLPP is set to increase Qatar’s overall petrochemical production capacity by a remarkable 82%, reaching nearly 14 million tons per year. This expansion is expected to support a diverse array of industries worldwide, from natural gas infrastructure to packaging for food and medical supplies. The project will also boost Qatar’s HDPE production, underscoring the nation’s commitment to growth and economic diversification.

HRP SA516 Gr70 provides several key benefits:

High Tensile Strength (485-620 MPa): Ensures strength and durability under high pressure, which is essential for large-scale industrial operations like ethane cracking.

Excellent Toughness: Designed to perform reliably even in extreme temperatures, with enhanced notch toughness crucial for pressure vessel construction.
