Project Story

We are excited to announce our involvement in the construction of the 4 new salvage tugboats for the Suez Canal, a project initiated in response to the critical need for enhanced maritime safety and efficiency in one of the world's most vital waterways. This initiative, a collaboration between the Egyptian Navy and the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), underscores a significant leap forward in safeguarding global trade routes and showcases our commitment to supporting smooth and safe passage of vessels through this vital waterway.

In a pivotal contribution to this project, CUMIC supplied 3302 tons of shipbuilding plate Grade A/D/EH36 and 265 tons flat bulb, which is designed particularly to manufacture ship hull. The tugboats, measuring 71.6 meters in length and 18.5 meters in width, with a maximum speed of 16 knots and the capability to sustain operations at sea for 35 days, which represent a significant advancement in maritime engineering and emergency response capabilities.

The design and construction of these tugboats involve navigating through complex engineering challenges, including the integration of advanced navigation and safety systems, to ensure they meet the rigorous demands of salvage operations in the Suez Canal.

Shipbuilding Plate Grade A:

  • Durability and Strength: Essential for the structural integrity of the tugboats, ensuring they can withstand the harsh marine environment and demanding operational conditions.

  • Lightweight: Despite its strength, the steel's lightweight nature facilitates efficient construction and contributes to the vessels' operational efficiency.

  • Customization Flexibility: The ability to tailor the steel plates to specific dimensions and shapes is critical for the unique design specifications of these specialized tugboats.

  • Resilience Against Corrosion and Fire: These properties are paramount for the longevity and safety of the vessels, especially given their role in emergency and salvage operations.

  • Safety and Reliability: CUMIC’s ship plate meets all the requirements of renowned classification societies -- ABS/BV/CCS/DNV/GL/KR/LR/NK/RINA/ZY, which guarantees the highest safety and quality standards.

This project is a testament to our capabilities and commitment to excellence in the global steel supply chain, reinforcing our role as a key player in supporting world-class infrastructure developments. We are proud to contribute to a project that not only represents a significant technological advancement but also a strategic investment in the future of international maritime safety and commerce.
